Week 12 – Finishing the First Draft

Current projects

Another week down. And I did it. I finished the first draft of Queen of Werewolves. This first draft is 96,223 words. I tend to write my first drafts light, so the final word count is going to be interesting.

Writing Queen of Werewolves has been insane. It was hard. It was also very rewarding. I’ve finished stories before. Quite a few, but there’s something different about this one. I think it has to do with the fact that all three books in The Lost Princess of Howling Sky follow the same main characters, and Queen of Werewolves is their farewell. I’ve spent more time with them, and I’ve grown more attached to them than other characters I’ve written because of that. And because these books ended up on the long end.

Who knows?

The fact remains I actually cried after dictating the last scene just before the epilogue. I’ve finished over twenty books or something and none of them have done that to me before. I’m not much of a crier. But I think this is a good sign. I’ve always wanted to write stories that are raw and emotional. I’ve always wanted to make readers think, to take them for a ride, to move them to tears, to make them laugh out loud and feel that warmth in their chest–I want to write stories that are remembered years later.

I’ve learned a lot since this book. I’ve published over a million words, and it’s just now I feel like I’m really starting to figure out what kind of a writer I am. Maybe that’s a silly thing to say, but whatever. I’ll keep learning and growing. I’ll do my best to make each new book better than the last. I feel like Queen of Werewolves is well on its way to achieving that.

Level up!

In other news, Taken by Werewolves and Saving the Werewolves are both available as audiobooks now as well as eBooks. I think they sound amazing. It’s surreal listening to them since I’m the one who wrote the words. I think the narrators did an excellent job. I stayed up until 3:00 a.m. listening to Saving the Werewolves this week. It was a trip. A good trip.

I can’t wait to share the epic finale with you all.

Queen of Werewolves – The Lost Princess of Howling Sky Book 3

I got 14,380 words in for the first draft and finished it, as I said. It’s time to celebrate. When you hit those milestones, you have to, right? Well, I usually don’t. But I think I’ll celebrate with NieR:Automata. I’ve been obsessed with that game, friends. OBSESSED.

Once Soulmates – These Immortal Vows Book 3

I got 2,600 words in for the first draft. I’ve been through a lot of words with the characters in The Lost Princess of Howling Sky, but I’ve actually been through more with the characters in These Immortal Vows. Their story is far from over, but if finishing The Lost Princess of Howling Sky made me feel that emotional, this one is probably going to destroy me. I’ve already publishing 330,000 words in this series, and I’m not even halfway through if my outline is any indication…

Conclusion

I had a pretty productive week. I’m not quite up to the level I want to be at, but I’m working on it.

How was your week? What did you do? Let’s work hard again this week!
